The Five Pillars of our Immune System: Command & Control

In previous blogs, we introduced the five pillars of the immune system: PowerBlood, Command & Control, Hunters and Cell Walls

This blog will delve into our command and control system that allows cells to signal to each other and coordinate responses to wounds and pathogens and the micronutrients needed to make them.  

The command and control network is called the Eicosanoid system.  The root of the word traces back to the Greek language," eicosa" meaning 20.  Eicosanoids were named after an Omega 6 fatty acid called Arachidonic Acid (AA) which has 20 carbons forming its backbone.  AA is widely used to form both pro & anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.

When we get an injury or detect foreign pathogens, the pro-inflammatory eicosanoid system kicks in.  Pro-inflammatory eicosanoids are made from AA plus other Omega 6 fatty acids.   Signals are sent out to increase blood flow and call for the release of various types of white blood cells (our "hunters").   As we recover,  anti-inflammatory eicosanoids dominate  sending signals to tell our pro-inflammatory response to stand down.   Anti-inflammatory eicosanoids use a combination of AA and Omega 3 fatty acids. 
 

In our blog about blood, we covered the massive shift in industrialized diets increasing the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 from 2.5:1 100 years ago to 20:1 today.  The rising levels of Omega 6 tilts the playing field in the favor of the pro-inflammatory response in turn creating the ideal conditions for chronic inflammation and high blood pressure in population segments eating this type of diet.  We also covered where to get micronutrient Omega 3 fatty acids.

What about AA?   Two of the precursors are linoleic acid and CBD.  We get linoleic acid from eating nuts, seeds & legumes and grains. Our cells make CBD naturally.  Both AA and CBD are antioxidants. 

If we are under stress with a wound or bacterial/viral infection, we call on our mitochondria to increase power (one of our pillars) which in turn increases the amount of surplus reactive oxygen species (ROS)  the mitochondria produces.  If left unmitigated, these surplus ROS will deplete our reserves of CBD and AA and ultimately our ability to properly control our immune system's response to wounds and infections. The micronutrient astaxanthin if in your diet will help protect CBD and AA from being oxidized by ROS.
